Black Friday Blog Hop

Greetings and salutations, my dears.

If you're not fighting the crowds on this busiest of all busy shopping days, you're in for a treat! By partaking in this one-day Black Friday Blog Hop, you can enter to win scads of super sensational prizes. I'll get to those in a minute. In the spirit of consumerism, I thought I'd blog about one of my very favorite shopping-related movies. Sticky Fingers, released in 1988, is an adorable little gem of a film that not too many people know about.

Lolly and Hattie are two struggling musicians who share an apartment in gritty Lower Manhattan. When a friend asks her to look after her tote bag, Hattie agrees, and only later do she and Lolly realize the bag contains nearly a million dollars in cash. Spooked, they decide to put the bag away and try not to think about it. But first… their landlady takes steps to evict them from their apartment because they haven’t been paying rent. And then… they have a break-in one night and their instruments are stolen. You can probably see where this is going. They need to pay their rent. They need to replace their instruments. Their definition of what a “necessity” is shifts as they find they need things like electronic equipment, haute couture and caviar. Sticky Fingers is not exactly a critical masterpiece, but for a fun, chick flick-ish, screwball comedy, it fits the bill perfectly.

To expand upon the shopping theme, I thought I’d post a short excerpt from my novel, Fashioning a Romance. Caitlyn, the heroine, is trying to find a dress to wear for a night out with John – the guy she’s determined not to fall for. Here’s the excerpt:

“The Dress was designed for the hour-glassy figure; the bodice was structured, the waist nipped in, and the skirt molded itself beautifully to Caitlyn’s hips. The mossy green fabric was sand-brushed silk: a fabulous silk with a suede-like texture, and it was cut on the bias, allowing for plenty of movement.

The neckline was the only thing that gave her a moment’s pause. Not exactly the kind of dress she’d wear to hang out with her grandma, it was pretty low-cut and offered a fairly impressive display of cleavage. Normally Caitlyn didn’t mind showing off her assets, but she was worried about the message she’d be sending John by wearing this particular dress. And she, no doubt, would be sending a message – Caitlyn’s “Fashion as Communication” senior dissertation had been a labor of love, the highlights of which were melded into her mind.

Hm. By wearing The Dress, would she be conveying to John that she was interested? But what was the alternative? Show up in some shapeless number like she’d just stepped off the bus from Frumpsville?

Oh, who cared about the message to John? Caitlyn was too in love with The Dress to possibly resist buying it. Anyway, she could always wear her cardigan too. Course that would kind of spoil the effect; it would be like eating caviar with a plastic spoon.”

Bouncing Around the Blogosphere

Hello, my darlings!

I've been very busy lately, coordinating a blog tour to coincide with the release of Unmasking Maya, out on December 15th. While the tour hasn't officially kicked off yet, I have been flitting about on the net a bit this week.

Incredible premise, this one. A vintage dress launches the narrator's search for clues into her late mother's life and though it deals with some serious stuff, it's written in a fun, light voice.

6. Hidden in Paris by Corine Gantz

A beautifully written story about three women struggling with their own issues who bond in friendship. As delicious as a tarte tatin.

7. Fashioning a Romance by Libby Mercer

Bien sur! Of course I had to give my own book a shout-out. Here's what I said about it: This light hearted love story is one part romance and one part chick lit with a dash of humor and a pinch of glitz. J'adore!

8. Left Bank by Kate Muir

This slightly satirical story exposes the lives of the ultra rich on the... you guessed it - the Left Bank. It's full of quirky characters and hilarious irony.

9. Sleeping with Paris by Juliette Sobanet

Yep, that's right. Juliette Sobanet is just such a fab author (and fellow Francophile) that I had to include her other book on this list. This delightful book details the dating world in Paris.

10. Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans

I know, I know. It's not the same kind of story as the others, but I just had to include this one. One of the first girly books I fell in love with, Madeline is timeless.

The Girly Book Blog Hop: Sensational Secondary Characters

The Ever So Darling Sophie Harrington

“True, she was away with the fairies more often than anyone Caitlyn had ever known, but her heart was as big as her bank balance, and on the rare occasion that Caitlyn couldn’t fulfill one of her requests, Sophie was gracious and forgiving.”

Like many other romance authors – I suspect – I fell in love with the hero and heroine of my own book. Although Caitlyn is most definitely not me, we do share a lot of the same qualities. A strong work ethic, an adventurous spirit, tall girl issues. How could this character not be dear to my heart? And John, with his bizarre eccentricities, high intellect and total hotness, is pretty much my dream guy. So naturally I feel an affinity for my hero and heroine. But John’s sister, Sophie, is right up there with these two when it comes to my favorite Fashioning a Romance characters.

Fabulously whimsical and exuding easy charm, Sophie Harrington leads the kind of life that most of us can only ever dream of. She doesn’t have a job (well… not at the beginning of the book, anyway) and lives rent-free in a sprawling house owned by her parents in one of London’s poshest neighborhoods. Her social calendar is jam-packed, her passport is filled with stamps, she spends excessive amounts of time (and money) in the boutiques and the spas, and she calls everyone “darling”.

I knew I was taking somewhat of a risk by creating such a character. Figured there would be some readers who’d write her off as a materialistic airhead or perhaps even a stereotypical stock character – the ditz. She may come off this way in the beginning – although it is clear from the beginning that she’s a kind soul with a fragile side – but by the end of Fashioning a Romance, Sophie is a changed woman. She’s found her direction and she’s taken the first steps towards realizing her dream. She’s conscientious, she’s driven and she’s smarter than you might have thought. But she still calls everybody “darling”.

Maybe they add a little subtle favor, or maybe they give it a fiery hot kick. Maybe they make your meal unforgettable - beef stew with molasses and raisins anyone?

Who could ever forget Shazzer from the Bridget Jones books? Or Becky Sharp from Vanity Fair? Or Grandma Mazur from the Stephanie Plum books?

Gotta Love a Makeover!

It was time to change things up, so I thought I'd play around with blog colors and make things a bit more fresh. I know it's a lot of pinky purple, but I suppose I'm in a pinky purple kind of mood. :-)

Many apologies for neglecting the blog so much as of late. I've got a lot going on these days with three different writing projects in various stages. One finished and in edits with Musa, one finished that I've decided to self-publish this December, and one only just started. I've got my hands full, but I love it!

Lovestruck by Lisa Scott's Wedding Flirts!

‘Tis the Season

It’s that time of year again: we’re all getting our nails done and strapping on our dancing shoes to watch our friends and loved ones march down the aisle. Or perhaps some of us are marching down the aisle ourselves. In the spirit of the season, I figured I’d blog about Lisa Scott’s Wedding Flirts, which I, for one, fell head over heels in love with.

Wedding Flirts is a collection of five romantic short stories. These sweet – and often hilarious tales – are fine as stand-alones, but because they’re loosely tied together, they work beautifully as a collection. The final story features all the couples from the previous tales, united at the world’s wackiest wedding.

The collection opens with “My Fake Fiancé” in which our heroine hires a hot guy to act the part of her fiancé at her long-time frenemy’s wedding.  Their roles soon begin to feel natural… very natural. Next up is “Bridesmaid Blues” where our heroine, a committed singleton finds herself smitten with the quintessential marriage-minded man. “The One That Got Away” is an emotional tale about lost love, and an old couple being reunited at the worst possible time – right before they’re both getting married to other people. “Wedding Auditions” is hands-down the most hysterical story I’ve read in ages. The love story is absolutely fabulous, but I have to say the bridezilla – a secondary character – kinda steals the show. And finally in “Do Over” the wedding photographer who’s popped up in most of the previous stories encounters her high school crush and is forced to relive her most humiliating moment. But she didn’t get the whole picture way back when…

One thing I loved about the collection was that the stories were incredibly varied. Some of them were lighter than others. Some were a bit somber, touching on serious subjects such as terminal illness. There was a mixture of first-person and third-person perspective, and one of the stories, “Wedding Auditions” was told strictly from the heroine’s point of view.

All in all, Wedding Flirts is a delightful read. The stories were packed with LOL moments, one of which I absolutely must share with you.

In “Bridesmaid Blues” Mikki, the committed singleton, has already expressed her desire for Ben, the handsome groomsman who’s looking to settle down. Although he plainly informed her that he’s not interested in a one-night stand, they’ve got crazy chemistry, and her frustrations are increasing by the moment. He’s on the dance floor with every old lady and little girl in the wedding party, and Mikki keeps trying to cut in. But each time she makes her attempt, someone else moves in and snatches him up for the next dance.

Lisa Scott writes, “I was about to tie my white g-string on a stick to announce I was giving up.”

And I just about fell out of my chair, laughing.

Although I’ve only recently discovered Lisa Scott, she’s got loads of short stories and short story collections out – which I have to say is kind of bittersweet news for me. (I want to read them all immediately, but my to-be-read list is already the size of a small mountain.) Seriously, though, if you’re a fan of well-written love stories that make you giggle like a schoolgirl, you should check her work out. Gotta love this gal…

What IS it About Paris?

As you may have deduced from the cover, a large chunk of Fashioning a Romance takes place in Paris. I didn’t know I’d send my characters there when I first started writing the story, but I needed to get them out of London and the City of Love seemed like the obvious destination. Paris truly is the most romantic city in the world. Well… it’s the most romantic city I’ve ever been to.

I must admit, I wasn’t all that stoked about going there my first time. Confession time: don’t laugh but… I think I’d seen Peewee’s Big Adventure one too many times and if you recall, the waitress Peewee encounters is obsessed with Paris. And as I got older I came across other (non-fictional) people who were obsessed with Paris. To me, Paris seemed like a cliché sort of place, so it wasn’t high on my list of cities I wanted to visit. But a few years ago when my mom and sister planned a trip there, I decided on a whim to tag along. It was pre-9/11 when flights were dirt-cheap and I flew from NYC to Paris for around $300 if memory serves. And the moment I arrived, I was utterly besotted.

But why? What is it about this city that enchants us so? In Fashioning a Romance, Caitlyn wonders the very same thing as she goes for a solitary stroll along the Seine. Her theory is that because so many people visit Paris when they’re already feeling romantic – like for honeymoons or just sweet romantic weekends – the city is constantly pulsating with amorous vibes. That it’s the people who populate Paris at any given moment who make it romantic, rather than the city itself.

Perhaps. Then again the beauty of the place (the gorgeous stonework, the gold-leaf bridges, the hidden narrow lanes and unexpected statues dotted everywhere) could have something to do with it, as could the relaxed and unhurried atmosphere.

The truth is: there is no correct answer, I’m afraid. Thirza Vallois, author of Romantic Paris writes,

“For decades I tried to figure out why Paris is shrouded in such mystique. Granted, walks at night along the Seine are enchanting, but that alone cannot explain why the very mention of Paris has always conjured up tales of romance, well before it was blessed with gas or electricity, well before its exquisitely lit street-corners were replicated the world over in black-and-white print. After all, medieval Paris was a dark den of filth, reeking with nauseous stench, and the two sinister prison fortresses that jutted out of its skyline could hardly have been conducive to romance. Not to mention the 32 rotting corpses dangling in the offing when the royal gallows was used to full capacity. Yet the myth has been perpetuated for a good thousand years.
