Representin' for the Tall Girls

In romantic fiction, there are certain characteristics that are pretty much mandatory for our heroes to possess. They’ve got strong personalities and they’ve got hard names – Jake, Luke, Jack. You’d be hard pressed to find a Trevor, an Elijah or a Julian as your romantic hero. Our heroes also, virtually without fail, have got impressive height.

Our heroines can be any height, but they’re generally average or below average when it comes to stature. I cannot count the number of times I’ve read sentences such as, “Even in her sky high stilettos, she barely reached his shoulder” or “He towered over her by at least a foot.” As a tall woman, I must confess: I find such sentences a bit irritating.  Do these dainty little ladies really need these towering studs? Certainly not.  Women of average or below average height can pair up with practically any man without feeling like she’s dating her son. Tall women… not so much.

Yes, I know that these stories are works of fiction, and let me be clear that I do not begrudge any of the couples I know who fit this description, nor do I shoot daggers at said couples when I see them on the street. But when I started writing Fashioning a Romance, I was determined that in my book it would be a tall girl who gets the tall guy. 

Not that John towers over Caitlyn by “at least a foot”. He’d have to be over seven feet tall to do so.  But he has got a few inches on her, which inspires Caitlyn to buy her very first pair of heels. For the first time, she gets to experience the sensation of feeling delicate and dainty, a sensation that’s completely foreign to her. And more than a little thrilling.

So I’d like to give a shout out to all the fabulously tall gals out there, and specifically to my pals: Sally, Hilary, Laura, Vikki, Natasha, Alida, Cristina, Celia, Martha and Allison (I hope I’m not forgetting anyone) and to my virtual tall gal pals: Bronwyn and Ladylilchub. And to those of you who are single, I hope you find your very own John Harrington soon.

Chick Lit Author Blog Hop 2012 - The Incomparable Bernadette Strachan

A few years ago, I was browsing in Borders (RIP Borders) when I happened upon a book with the most adorable cover. It featured a woman with flippy hair, a flippy skirt, a little dog and a parasol amidst several colorful beach umbrellas. Naturally I picked up this book, Little White Lies by Bernadette Strachan. I read the back copy, smiled and headed straight for the register.

Fast-forward a couple of months and I was the proud owner of all the books Ms. Strachan had had published.  And she had become one of my all-time favorite authors.

I’m really not sure what I love best about her writing. It’s got to be a toss up between her outrageous characters and her hilarious turns of phrase.  Just to pick a couple of examples at random, Ms. Strachan creates memorable characters such as Blair Taylor, the perma-tanned television host from Handbags and Halos who’s addicted to astrology readings and colonic irrigations and Sister Jane, the rabble-rousing nun from Diamonds and Daisies whose fierce competitive side bursts through during a piggyback race scene.

Here are a couple of snippets I found just now as I was flipping through my books:

“Like Marmite and Barbara Streisand, beach huts divide people into two distinct camps. You either love them or you hate them.  Billie loathed Marmite and the way it made her breath smell of the undead; Ms. Streisand’s heavy-handed way with a ballad gave her the dry heaves; but she loved beach huts. She was mad about their cheerful décor, their dinky dimensions and their unabashed kiss-me-quick vulgarity.”

“The arthritic wheezing of the buses circling the green hissed minibreak.  Yehudi’s bow scratched out the word on his violin, and the birds twittered, minbreak, minibreak as they squabbled over worms in the grass.  Or so it seemed to Ruby as she made her way to Drama Queen’s.”

I ask you, have you ever heard of a more creative way to convey the fact that someone needed a vacation?!

Not that Ms. Strachan’s books are all light-hearted tales of the candy-in-the-sky variety. Not even close. Her characters deal with all sorts of issues including abandonment, disgrace, infidelity, homelessness, homophobia, disability and more. But the stories unfold in such a delightful and fresh way, they’re anything but heavy. Not to mention the plot twists. Ms. Strachan’s books are anything but predictable.  I can’t praise this fabulous writer enough, but I’d better stop before I get carried away. Highly recommended!

Two Weeks to Go!

Two weeks from right now I will officially be a published author. It's hard to believe. This is something I've been working on since I wrote my first "book" at the age of seven. Naturally I'm running around like a chicken with my head cut off, making sure I've got all my ducks in a row. What's up with the farmyard references, you may ask? Who knows? Maybe Fashioning a Romance will be the goose that laid the golden egg?  Haha. Probably not, but fingers crossed that people like it. And toes crossed, and legs, and eyes...
